Packers Draft 2008 PDF Print E-mail

The Packers started their draft by trading out of the first round on Saturday, swapping the #30 pick for the Jets' early second rounder (#36) and a fourth round pick (#113). They then took 6'3" wide receiver Jordy Nelson from Kansas State with their first of three second round picks. Jordy Nelson Video-

With their second pick in the second round (#56) the Packers addressed their need for a backup quarterback, by taking Louisville's Brian Brohm, who was considered to be one of the most NFL-ready QBs in the draft, and a potential first round pick. Brian Brohm Video-

The need for a future starting cornerback was addressed late in the second round, when the Packers used the #60 overall pick for CB Patrick Lee, who played in a mainly man-to-man coverage scheme at Auburn, similar to the one the Packers employ. Patrick Lee Video-

In the third round, the Packers took 6'5" 242 lbTexas tight end Jermichael Finley with the #91 pick. Jermichael Finley Video-
In the fourth round, Ted Thompson did the unthinkable, and actually traded up for a player, drafting 6'5" 264 lb defensive end Jeremy Thompson with the #102 pick. They then started trading down, to stockpile picks, and traded a 7th round pick for a 2009 6th rounder from the Saints.
The Packers addressed their need for depth in the offensive line with their next two picks, drafting 6'4" 319 pounder Josh Sitton and 6'7" 303 lb Breno Giacomini.
The sixth round pick for the 2008 draft had been traded to the NY Giants earlier this year, so the only remaining picks for the Packers were in the seeventh round, and were used, strangely enough, on a QB, Matt Flynn of LSU, and a WR, Brett Swain from San Diego State.
