From most of the mocks I have seen, Best would be a reach at 23. I am happy with our backfield for now. I'd like a great O line b4 getting the great runner. And as others have said...we have greater needs than there. Maybe we can get McKnight later in the draft.

Chris Johnson was a reach by the Titans according to most mocks, and not a position of need either.

Just sayin...

In fact, this is a nice vid: http://ballhype.com/video/tita.....pick_espn/

And this:

Quote:
What was the critical reaction to the team's picks? Chris Johnson's pick in the first round left many experts scratching their heads, as Johnson is believed to be a good player but hardly first pick material. The critical consensus is that Johnson could have easily been chosen along with other countless names at a later point in the draft. This move parallels the Titans' strategy (or lack thereof) for the last three years. First, with the team selecting LenDale White in the 2nd round two years back; then Chris Henry in round two in 2007; now the Titans have yet again invested in another premium draft choice in a single position. Like the previous seasons, unfortunately, the Titans still do not have an A-level NFL starter. Some critics have suggested the team is choosing quantity over quality, by refusing to bring in a phenomenal talent. The Titans had access to choosing every pass catcher in the draft as well as players like Vince Young or Devin Thomas. Some Titans fans have objected to this line of reasoning saying that Chris Johnson is a versatile player who can be a playmaker for the team's offense.

And these:

Quote:
Tennessee Titans - RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina
Easily the worst [pick of the first round]. With a guy like DE Phillip Merling still on the board, the Titans take a a return specialist and a back-up RB. Ugh!

Quote:
GRADE: D+

• Tennessee Titans: If they plan on running the wishbone, boost the grade. RB Chris Johnson ran the fastest times in the 40-yard dash at the combine and then ran right into the first round with a team that keeps drafting at this position (LenDale White, Chris Henry) and pays too little attention to its WRs and the holes along the d-line. No team had fewer TD catches last year than the Titans' nine and the Titans did not do enough here to help QB Vince Young.

Quote:
Tennessee Titans: D
Wow. That's all I could say about the Chris Johnson selection. The Titans have had several scrap heap running backs over the past few years and that's been working fine. But to not pick up some athletes and playmakers to help Vince Young was just ridiculous.

Love that little part I bolded there... Laughing

So many that are all worthy of a chuckle:

Quote:
Are the Titans planning on just saying screw it and running the wishbone? Are they ever going to get any help for Vince Young? Don't you think that maybe reuniting Young with Limas Sweed made sense, they couldn't trade up 2 places to do it with all those 4th rounders? Chris Johnson ran an incredible combine time, but who is he replacing? LenDale White, or Chris Henry, we don't think so.
Johnson’s biggest asset is his blazing speed - He has been clocked at 4.20, which is lightning, especially considering his size (5-11, 195 lbs.) However, this is way too high for him to go in the draft. A one trick pony who compare to Brian Westbrook, he is better than Westbrook as a returner, but not as good as a runner.

Quote:
•The worst pick of the draft so far is without a doubt Tennessee drafting RB Chris Johnson with the 24th pick. Johnson is all speed and probably would have been around well into the second-round. On top of that, Vince Young still doesn't have any great targets, yet he now has another running back instead. That just doesn't make any sense.

Well mnkcarp, if you can guarantee that he will be anywhere near as good then go for it. Otherwise I agree with other posters that RBs have the shortest life in the NFL and if we improve our O line before getting the really special back...he will last that much longer. A few more holes upfront is something we need more imho.

Nobody can guarantee anything, ever. That goes for every position you can mention. Just pointing out that the same arguments against taking a Spiller or a Best were alive and well two years ago and the right back shot them completely full of holes in that instance.

Nice post Mnkcarp....

I think it is easy to defend picking Best because he can score whenever he touches the ball.....screens, counters, swings, pitches, punt and kick returns.

Hard to argue against picking an OT because the Packers have a very dynamic offense already and it is an obvious need, but the extra dimension a significant scoring threat would bring may make them unstoppable.

Nice post Mnkcarp, I like the part that said they shouldve gotten Limas "I always drop the ball" Sweed instead of Johnson and the other one that said he wouldnt be as good of a runner as Brian Westbrook. Laughing

Me too PFIC - I also really liked this:
