If Steve Smith is still retiring, Ravens should trade him to a contender

Posted by Mike Florio on October 21, 2015, 9:18 PM EDT

The Ravens, at 1-5 through six games, are as a practical matter done. Sure, they could in theory run the table and make it to the playoffs. However, it’s a long shot at best that it will happen.

So with veteran receiver Steve Smith still intent on retiring after the season, the Ravens should consider finding a way to get value for a guy who won’t be with the team in 2016.

Plenty of contenders need receivers, and the Packers would be a great fit for a savvy veteran who knows how to get open and how to inspire young players. Smith has shown an affinity for stepping up and performing on the postseason stage, and the Packers could use a kick in the butt when it’s time to play in the single-elimination format, given their struggles since 2010 to progress deep into the field.

With a prime-time game coming up against the Cardinals on Monday night, Smith could showcase his skills in a way that would prompt a contender to pick up the phone and make the Ravens an offer that, given Smith’s plans and the current predicament of the team, would be hard to refuse.

The Packers lunatic fringe is more visible because of sheer numbers. The Packers have one of the largest fan bases in all of sports. If the fringe percentage is the same as with other teams, then we end up with larger volumes of nut jobs. - JustJeff

He would immediately sprain his ankle signing the offer sheet.

Most I would give too...wouldn't be against it I guess. He's been banged up with some broken ribs but he's not washed up by any means at all. Don't care for his attitude too much, but can't deny the guy can play.

It doesn't matter who becomes available. I am sure that one of TT's concerns is how a blue chip player might affect locker room chemistry. TT is likely to pass on most players that would become available whatever the contract cost might be.

If Steve Smith had any say in the matter whatsoever, he'd be headed back to Carolina, I think.

Besides, I think we all know a move like this would be way outside the typical TT MO.

For a 6th I sure would. Not giving up to much with some comp picks coming our way. It be a risen type move. Rent a guy with some fire. The man plays hard and sending him and pep to the pasture with a ring would be great. M

Don't see it happening

Rather than a WR, why not a TE? I think once we get Adams and Montgomery back from injury we'll be O.K. and I would hope that Montgomery starts to make a little splash throughout the next 10 games. One of the bigger problems we've had on this offense is that guy who can catch over the middle AND GET the first downs, not go down to shoe string tackles

If I recall correctly, Andre Rison was taken off the street. Ron Wolfe did not trade for him. Isn't that true? If so, then this would not be a "[Rison] type move."

:-)

I'm surprised that anybody would offer any draft pick for a guy who would contribute for a month or two. Not exactly looking at long term there...

My thoughts exactly.

Steve can still play and he's practically carrying the team (and unfortunately for them they're still losing). I'd imagine he wouldn't come cheap. With his attitude I think he'd want some coin.

Stick with what we got. I don't think we've yet had any of our starting WR's on the field all at once and not injured. If we can just stay healthy this corps would be lights out.

Another WR isn't needed. Would anyone like to come here and try out for a LT position?

James Jones

I was thinking someone who hasn't been on the team and will come in mid season.

Jones simply came back home.
