World Chess Championship started today

The reigning champ is Viswanathan Anand (India). Anand is 43 and has held the title since 2007.

The challenger is Magnus Carlsen (Norway), age 22. Carlsen is the highest ranked player in the world, even ahead of Anand. Carlsen also has youth on his side (chess is physically and mentally exhausting at this level).

Anand is a supreme match player, much better in long stretches against the same opponent than in round robin type tournaments. Carlsen is the favorite but I think most are underestimating Anand's strength in matches as compared to tournaments.

The match consists of twelves games. The first game was today. It was a draw. Anand had black. Drawing with black is a win at this level. White has a significant advantage in moving first. Anand won today, essentially.
