2016 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Postby RingoCStarrQB » Mon Aug 03, 2015 12:37 am

Looking way ahead to the 2016 season ........ Sundays land on both December 25 and January 1.

Packers home opponents include the Giants, Cowboys, Houston, Indianapolis, NFC West (Seattle :D ),

Packers away opponents include the Redskins, Eagles, Jaguars, Titans, NFC South (who cares :D ).

Will be interesting to see how the schedule is prepared ............ versus the _________ on Christmas Day or New Years Day sounds great to me ............FILL IN THE BLANK with your favorite ___________________.

Does the NFL schedule on Christmas Day? I think in the past they have scheduled Saturday games for Christmas Eve instead. Not sure if the policy has changed, but when was the last time the NFL has played on Christmas Day?

Not often.

Christmas Day and Christmas Eve games in the National Football League are an occasional part of the league's schedule. In contrast to Thanksgiving Day games, however, they are not an annual occurrence; as of 2011, there have been just 17 Christmas Day games in the NFL's history.

After the NFL held two Divisional Playoff games on Christmas Day 1971, the league avoided any more games on Christmas Day until 1989. Starting in 1989, the NFL has held occasional games on Christmas Day in some years, as part of week 16 or 17 of the regular season. Two games were played each Christmas Day from 2004–06.

In recent years, the NFL has scheduled games on Christmas only if it falls on a day normally used for games – Saturday, Sunday or Monday. If Christmas falls on a Sunday, most games are moved to Saturday, Christmas Eve, and then one game is scheduled for Christmas Night to be broadcast nationally. One game is generally held over for the regular Monday night slot. This situation occurred in 1994, 2005 and 2011, and will again in 2016.

There is currently a window, from 9 p.m. local time Christmas Eve to 5 p.m. EST Christmas Day, when no games are played (i.e. no games on Christmas Eve night). Officially, this is done in deference to the holiday, although as a more practical matter it also allows the league to prevent its telecasts from being in direct competition with those of the National Basketball Association's regularly scheduled Christmas games.

Obviously not often... Just when they come around on Sunday... Which was the point of the thread, that this year they do. They don't rearrange the schedule because the regular games fall on Christmas Day. Before 2011, it happened in 2005.

No, they do rearrange the schedule, actually. Did you read what I posted? They move the bulk of the games that would be scheduled on Sunday to Saturday, leaving one prime time game on Christmas Day.

No I didn't. Interesting as this will be the 3rd instance in a row, if it happens, where Green Bay plays the Christmas Day game.

Green Bay is 1-1, all-time, on Christmas Day, splitting a pair of games with the Bears. Also, worth noting that the first ever regular season Christmas Day game was the day the Vikings killed the play-off chances of the Cardiac Pack.
