Chip Kelly: I rated Odell Beckham No. 1 overall in last year’s draft

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was the best rookie in the NFL last year. That came as no surprise to Eagles coach Chip Kelly.

Kelly said that heading into last year’s draft, he personally considered Beckham not just the best receiver in the draft but the best player, period. So why didn’t the Eagles move up from the No. 22 overall pick so that they could draft Beckham before the Giants got him at No. 12? Kelly said he just doesn’t believe in giving up that much to move up.

“I said it a year ago: I thought Odell Beckham was the best player in the draft. I was right. We didn’t have a chance to get Odell Beckham, but a lot of it depends on where you’re selecting,” Kelly said.

Asked if he was disappointed not to get Beckham last year, Kelly noted that last year, Howie Roseman had final say in the draft room.

“I didn’t have final say so, I mean, you always defer to who’s in charge,” Kelly said.

This year, Kelly has been given total control over personnel, and Kelly will run the draft. Which means that if there’s one player Kelly feels confident is the best in the draft, Kelly can do everything in his power to get that player. If that player is Marcus Mariota, the Eagles may not be done wheeling and dealing this offseason.

Not about Beckham.

This was about taking a dump on Howie Roseman.

Kind of a dick move by Kelly.

I couldn't tell if that's what he was getting at or if the reporter put it in that context. Because earlier in the same blurb, Kelly mentioned that he doesn't think you should give up that much to get a player and it depends where you draft. That sort of indicates that even if Kelly was in charge, he would not have moved up enough to get Beckham. The line on Roseman might have been a shot at him, or it might have just been an answer to "well, did you try to move up?" "That's not for me to try. You defer to who's in charge."

I could see it either way.

I wouldn't put Kelly and genius in the same paragraph just yet. :P

I sure wouldn't mind Mack or robo from that draft

Through 16 games, Odell Beckham leads all receivers in NFL history

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t just off to a great start in his NFL career. He’s off to the greatest start in NFL history.

Beckham played the 16th game of his career on Sunday, and through 16 games he has 115 catches for 1,612 yards. No player in NFL history has had those kinds of numbers in the first 16 games of his career.

The prior record for most catches in the first 16 games was set by then-Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin, who had 101 catches in his first 16 games. And the prior record for most receiving yards in the first 16 games was set by Bill Groman of the 1960-61 Houston Oilers, who had 1,593 yards in his first 16 games.

The one receiving mark Beckham doesn’t have for the first 16 games of his career is touchdowns: Randy Moss caught 17 touchdowns in the first 16 games of his career. With 14 touchdown catches, Beckham is second to Moss on that count.

I had him in my top tier with only 7 guys, Beckham, Watkins, Glenn Robinson, Jake Matthews, Clowney, Barr and Justin Gilbert ( ).

Beckham had his 14th career 100-yard receiving game for the Giants on Sunday, in just the 24th game of his career. Randy Moss didn’t have his 14th 100-yard game until his 39th career game. Jerry Rice didn’t have his 14th 100-yard game until his 47th career game. Terrell Owens didn’t have his 14th 100-yard game until his 84th career game. Those three players are the Top 3 in NFL history in career receiving yards
